Drones attacked the Ukrainian capital early Monday morning, the Kyiv city military administration said, urging people to heed air alerts.
“The enemy is attacking the capital,” the administration posted on Telegram.
“At the moment, 9 enemy UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have already been shot down in the airspace of Kyiv.”
It also stated that the Russian forces were employing barrage rounds from “Shaheds,” Iranian-made weaponry that have recently pounded the capital.
At 1:56 am (2356 GMT), the city’s civil authority issued an initial air alert that lasted little over three hours. Within a half-hour, a second siren set to sound at 5:24 am (03:24 GMT) was cancelled.
On Monday, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, admitted that there had been “explosions” in the city.
“Several explosions were heard in the Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts of the capital,” he said. “All services work on the ground. More details later.”
In the ten months since Russia’s incursion in February, Ukraine has been the target of numerous lethal aerial attacks.
This summer and fall, Moscow changed its tactics and intensified its aerial assault in response to a string of significant battlefield defeats and lost territory.
According to the Russian defense ministry, the airstrikes target Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure while also interfering with “the transfer of weapons and ammunition of foreign production.”
