Elon Musk took over Twitter late Thursday, firing its top executives and putting one of the leading platforms for global discourse under the control of the world’s richest man.
Musk has fired the company’s chief executive, Parag Agrawal, as well as its chief financial officer and head of safety, according to the Washington Post and CNBC, citing unnamed sources.
Agrawal had previously gone to court to make Tesla chief Elon Musk adhere to the terms of a takeover deal that Musk had tried to back out of.
The reports surfaced just a few hours before Musk was supposed to finalize his deal to buy the social media network, as per the court-appointed deadline.
Musk said that he bought Twitter because it is important to have a digital town square where people can debate a variety of beliefs in a healthy way.
Twitter declined to comment when asked about the departure of its top executives, but co-founder Biz Stone thanked the trio–Agrawal, Ned Segal, and Vijaya Gadde–for their “collective contribution to Twitter.”
