Bangladesh cancelled tender to buy 50,000 tonnes wheat

An official stated on Monday, confirming claims from European traders, that Bangladesh’s state grain buyer has canceled and withdrawn an international offer to buy and import 50,000 tonnes of wheat with no purchase completed.

The deadline for the bid was set for September 18.

“We’ll re-issue the tender if needed,” a senior official at the state grain purchasing agency said. “But at the moment, we don’t require the tender as we have finalised deals with Russia to buy 500,000 tonnes.”

“We have already purchased 100,000 tonnes of wheat from Bulgaria and another 50,000 tonnes of wheat from Ukraine is on the way via open tenders.”

The south Asian nation has been looking at ways to acquire wheat since its major supplier India halted exports of the crop in May, making it one of the importers particularly hard-hit by disruptions to Ukrainian and Russian grain exports caused by the fighting in Ukraine.

According to a dealer located in Dhaka, private traders have recently purchased wheat for Bangladesh from Bulgaria, Russia, and Ukraine.
“Average C&F price is $350, which is reasonable,” the trader said. “Four vessels, each carrying 50,000 tonnes, are on the way while 10 more vessels will arrive in the next two months.”
