Wednesday, the United Nations claimed “reliable allegations” that Russian forces had abducted children from Ukraine and brought them to their country, while Russian President Vladimir Putin charged that the West had benefited from the loosened grain embargo.
In the meantime, Kiev claimed that its forces had retaken a sizable amount of ground in a counteroffensive southeast of Kharkiv that could endanger important Russian supply routes, according to experts.
The European Commission proposed a number of measures, including a price cap on Russian gas, to curb energy prices and punish Moscow for invading Ukraine as Europe braced itself for the possibility of a winter with insufficient energy supply.
“We are facing an extraordinary situation, because Russia is an unreliable supplier and is manipulating our energy markets,” warned EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.
“Our unity and our solidarity will ensure that we will prevail,” she added.
