Mbappe, Messi helps PSG stay top in Ligue 1

On Saturday, Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris St. Germain easily defeated Nantes, 3-0, to maintain their lead atop the Ligue 1 rankings as they prepared for their Champions League debut.

After scoring twice after the break to bring his season total to seven, France star Kylian Mbappe was substituted by Neymar as coach Christophe Galtier tried to save the pair for Tuesday’s match against Juventus.

PSG leads Olympique de Marseille, who defeated AJ Auxerre 2-0 away from home, on goal differential with 16 points after six games.

Olympique Lyonnais, who have a game remaining, moved up to third place on 13 points following a convincing 5-0 victory against Angers thanks to a brace from Karl Toko Ekambi and a goal from Alexandre Lacazette.

With 13 points as well, RC Lens are in fourth place and will be at Stade de Reims on Sunday.

After being set up by Lionel Messi in the 18th minute, Mbappe beat Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont from inside the area to give PSG the lead.

Six minutes later, Fabio Da Silva was shown a straight red card for a violent tackle on Vitinha, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

Mbappe doubled the lead nine minutes into the second half at the end of a quick counterattack. The 23-year-old found Messi in the box and the Argentine slid the ball towards Mbappe who tapped in at the near post.

Nuno Mendes then made it 3-0 in the 68th minute, firing home after Neymar’s strike had bounced off the post for PSG’s 24th goal in Ligue 1 this season.
