The Taliban are scheduled to meet with Western officials in Europe for the first time since seizing control in Afghanistan. The meetings will focus on humanitarian assistance.
Late Saturday, a Taliban group arrived in Oslo, Norway, for three days of discussions with Western authorities.
The talks, which are expected to go until Tuesday, will be the Taliban’s first encounter with Western diplomats in Europe since seizing power in Afghanistan in August of last year.
An all-male 15-member delegation arrived on a plane organized by the Norwegian government, according to a Taliban spokesman.
During their negotiations, which begin on Sunday, the very diverse sides are expected to debate human rights and humanitarian relief for Afghans.
The hardline militants will meet with officials from Norway and the European Union, as well as representatives from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States.
The Taliban are also expected to meet Afghans from civil society, including female leaders and journalists.
