Rohit Sharma hopes to end India’s world title drought

Rohit Sharma, India’s new limited-overs skipper, said he wanted to win a world title for the cricket-crazed country, something his dismissed predecessor Virat Kohli failed to do.

India rose in the one-day, Twenty20, and Test rankings during Kohli’s five-year tenure, but failed to win a single international competition.

India, who last won a world title in 2013 with the Champions Trophy, failed to reach the semi-finals of this year’s T20 World Cup and was eliminated from the 2019 50-over showpiece tournament in the last four.

In June, the team also lost to New Zealand in the inaugural World Test Championship final.

“We haven’t won an ICC trophy since 2013, but I don’t think we did anything wrong after that,” Rohit, 34, said in a video posted on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s official website on Sunday.

“We played as a team, we performed as a team,” he explained, “it’s just that we couldn’t gain that additional inch that we were hoping for.”

“There will be a lot of World Cup action in the coming months. India would undoubtedly want to perform well in all of those World Cups.”

Kohli was ousted as India’s ODI captain last week, a month after stepping down as T20 skipper after the T20 World Cup.

However, the 33-year-old remains India’s Test captain and will lead the team in three Tests starting on December 26 in South Africa.

Since taking over the limited-overs position from M.S. Dhoni in 2017, Rohit has lauded Kohli’s leadership.
