António Vitorino, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is in Mozambique for a three-day visit to assess and support the humanitarian response to ongoing displacement due to insecurity, as well as IOM interventions on recovery, community resilience, and peacebuilding.
The Director General paid a visit to the Metuge district, which is home to over 125,000 of the approximately 732,000 people who have been displaced since late 2017.
“I call for a swift increase of humanitarian aid to support the hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the ongoing instability in Cabo Delgado,” said DG Vitorino, who will leave the country on Wednesday.
“IOM’s operations have been greatly ramped up to reach tens of thousands of families every month.” Significant extra financing is needed to meet life-saving humanitarian needs and work toward long-term solutions, particularly before the next rainy and cyclone season, which begins in December.”
Families are still on the road, looking for refuge, humanitarian aid, and other forms of support while being uprooted from their homes.
According to the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix, more than 9,200 displaced individuals were on the move during the week of July 28 to August 3, with half of them having experienced several displacements (DTM).
IOM Mozambique assisted around 600,000 individuals in Cabo Delgado between January and July 2021, including shelter building or reconstruction, emergency shelters, retrofitting roof kits, and non-food or household items.
