Authorities, including the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard, are in charge of the search and rescue operation.

Following Saturday’s boat capsize in the Bay of Bengal, the UN refugee agency said it is still in communication with Rohingya communities on Bhasan Char and in Cox’s Bazar in an attempt to assist authorities in further rescue attempts.

“We are heartbroken that many passengers, including women and children, are believed to have drowned. The exact number has still to be determined “According to the UN agency.

Local Bangladeshi fishermen were the first on the scene and contacted Bangladeshi authorities, according to the UNHCR.
