Johnny Depp awards insulting, abuse charity says

Two major European film festivals have been chastised for honouring Johnny Depp at upcoming events, according to a top domestic abuse organization.

Depp will be honoured at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival later this month after losing a libel case last year over an article that dubbed him a “wife beater.”

In September, the American actor and director will be honoured with the Donostia Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Such prizes, according to Solace Women’s Aid, are “misleading” and “insulting.”

Depp will receive the festival’s “highest honorary prize” on September 22nd, according to the San Sebastian Film Festival in northern Spain.

Depp was praised as “one of today’s most gifted and varied performers,” with a reputation for playing “nearly always misfits,” according to the magazine.

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic announced on Tuesday that it would pay homage to the actor’s “extensive career and lasting impact.”

It called him a “multifaceted artist” and a “modern movie hero” who it was “thrilled” to honour at the festival, which runs from August 20 to August 28.
