After his contract expired at the end of June, Messi was free to discuss a transfer with other clubs, but Barcelona had always stated that he intended to stay with the club. The 34-year-old is said to have agreed to a new five-year contract.
Messi attempted to leave Barcelona in August 2020, submitting an official request to leave following a breakdown in his relationship with then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, but was persuaded to stay by successor Joan Laporta, who presided over the Argentine’s climb to stardom.
