Google, the world’s most popular search engine, has paid the National Board of Revenue Tk2.3 crore in value-added tax (VAT) (NBR).
They are the second big digital company to pay VAT in Bangladesh, following Facebook, which paid Tk2.44 crore on July 29. Both companies are registered with the Dhaka South VAT Commissionerate.
The foreign institution has filed a VAT of Tk55.78 lakh for May returns and another Tk1.74 crore for June, according to the Dhaka South VAT Commissionerate.
On Thursday, the corporation made a deposit to the national treasury at a Citibank NA location in Singapore.
“The returns have not yet reached the government, it had just found its way into the country as of now,” said PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Google’s local consultant. Once it arrived here, we had to sign documents as per process, and it will be put into bank accounts the next working day after the challan was submitted.”
In May, the search engine behemoth became one of the first foreign firms to register with NBR and obtain a business identity number (BIN) in Bangladesh, allowing it to take use of VAT-related services such as VAT payment and VAT return submissions.
