One person was killed and many others were injured when a bomb followed by a fire at a chemical industrial park in the western German city of Leverkusen on Tuesday.
An explosion rocked a chemical plant in Leverkusen, killing one person and injuring at least 31 others. The reason of the explosion is yet unknown, according to the site’s operators. There are four people that have gone missing.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and the death of an employee,” Chempark site operator Currenta said in a statement
“We hope that we can rescue the missing people alive,” Lars Friedrich, the head of Chempark, said at a press conference.
“This is a tragic moment for the city of Leverkusen,” said the city’s mayor, Uwe Richrath.
According to Germany’s DPA news agency, the explosion was classed as a “severe threat” by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, and the blast was detected at a seismological station 40 kilometers (25 miles) distant.
