According to La Vanguardia newspaper and ESPN, Lionel Messi is ready to sign a new five-year contract with Barcelona, with the Argentine talisman set to take a pay reduction.
Messi, Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer and appearance maker, finished his 21-year relationship with the club last month and is now a free agent after his previous contract expired.
Barca has been seeking to lower their pay cost since Joan Laporta took over as president, in order to keep Messi and stay under La Liga’s rigorous financial control laws.

Barcelona, which has a total debt of over 1 billion euros ($1.18 billion), will not be granted any leniency, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas.
According to a January article in the daily El Mundo, Messi’s latest deal, signed in 2017, was the most lucrative in international sport.
Junior Firpo, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Carles Alena were sold to make room for Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia, who were all signed as free agents.
Argentina overcame Brazil in the Copa America final over the weekend, and Messi, 34, won his first major international title with the team.
