The Bangladesh government will buy 15 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from China’s Sinopharm International at a lower price than originally agreed.
According to ministry Public Relations Officer Gazi Towhidul Islam, the purchase was approved at a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday, which was chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
“On July 2, Bangladesh received two million of the 15 million doses,” he added, adding that the lower price will apply to the remaining vaccines as well as an extra two million doses.
In May and June, Bangladesh received 1.1 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine as a gift from China on two occasions.
So far, eight Covid-19 vaccines have been approved for use in the country’s fight against the disease, which has claimed the lives of about 17,000 people.
