A large-scale search was launched Tuesday, hours after a passenger jet carrying 28 passengers vanished on Russia’s remote Kamchatka peninsula.
According to Valentina, the An-26 was traveling from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka’s capital, to the coastal town of Palana when it vanished at 2:40 p.m. (0240 GMT) Glazova, a spokesperson for the local transport prosecutor’s office.
She stated, “Search and rescue activities are ongoing.” “All that is known at this moment, what has been established, is that the plane’s contact was disrupted and it did not land.”
She claimed a local aviation business ran the jet in Kamchatka, a large peninsula on Russia’s Pacific coast known for its plentiful wildlife and active volcanoes, attracting adventurous travellers.
Local officials told Russian news media that most passengers were from Palana, a village of around 3,000 people, including four local government officials and the town’s leader, Olga Mokhiryova.
