Delta variants have become the leading cause of coronavirus infections worldwide. Soumya Swaminath, chief scientist of the World Health Organization, said this at a press conference on Friday (June 18).
He said the number of infected people in this variant is increasing at an alarming rate due to its rapid transmission capacity. This kind of spread is intensifying day by day in Europe. Delta variants accounted for 99 per cent of the country’s new corona cases in the last seven days, according to Public Health England.
Germany’s top health official says the Delta variant is spreading rapidly in the country despite the increase in vaccination rates. Most of the patients identified in the Russian capital, Moscow, are infected with the Delta variant. The US administration is also worried about the spread of Delta. The WHO says Delta is 75 percent more contagious than the alpha variant.
Soumya Swaminath, chief scientist at the WHO, said the delta variant was becoming the deadliest type of corona spreading at the moment. It is spreading at an alarming rate as it is much more contagious. More research is needed on this variant and the effectiveness of vaccines to prevent it.
