Hundreds of people have been left homeless in a fire at a Rohingya camp located south of the Indian capital, Delhi. According to the fire service, the fire started at 11:30 pm local time on Saturday.
Police say 55 houses in the Rohingya camp in the Madanpur Khadar area have been reduced to ashes. The fire was brought under control after a long 6-hour effort. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Atul Garg, Delhi Fire Services Chief, stated, “We got a call around 11.55 pm about the blaze and rushed with five fire tenders. Residents were immediately drained, and firefighting proceedings were initiated. There were no fatalities, but the fire expanded to all the huts. It was brought under control by 3 am.”
This is not the first time that the refugees have been left on the streets. Earlier in 2018, everything was burnt in the campfire. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire. They have sought immediate help from the Indian government.
Several homeowners sought through the rubble and ashes to check if any of their belongings could be recovered. Many said they didn’t have the opportunity last night to bring their documents and money with them when the fire started suddenly.
