The first step in saving the environment is a change in lifestyle

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Brunei Nahida Rahman Shumona said, “We have to take the first step to save the environment. We have to change our lifestyle. If we are not conscious of protecting our environment, we will not be able to survive on earth for long.” She said this while addressing a program called Green Dialogue on the occasion of Earth Day 2021 and addressing the young environmental activists as the chief guest.

Earth Day is being celebrated this year with the theme ‘Restore Our Earth’ to raise environmental awareness. The goal of this day is to sustain the earth by protecting the climate, environment and nature.

The event is jointly organized by Fridays for Future Bangladesh, Youthnet for Climate Justice, and Coastal Youth Action Hub in collaboration with the British Council’s PROKAS program. More than 120 young climate activists from across the country joined the dialogue, which was held on a virtual platform on Thursday afternoon with the slogan `Safe Earth, Green Forest, Ensure Firm Youth.’

At that time, the High Commissioner said, we have to think about nature and the environment as real friends. So young people need to grow up as zero waste producers to reduce waste and change their daily habits to ensure maximum utilization of resources.

The High Commissioner noted that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been playing a leading role in protecting the environment not only in Bangladesh but also in various forums around the world under the Climate Damage Forum (CVF).

Nahida Rahman Shumona also expressed solidarity with the youth in the Fridays for the Future movement.

Abul Bashar, Manager, PROKAS Program of the British Council, was present as a special guest at the function conducted by Sohanur Rahman, Executive Chief of Model Youth Parliament. Shakila Islam, Chief Coordinator of Youthnet for Climate Justice, Md. Aminul Islam, Chairperson of Pratik Youth Parliament, Mayuri Akhter Tumpa, Project Manager spoke on the topic of waste-free sustainable living.
