Press Club of Assam (PCA) emphasizes on the need of a modern multi-media centre in the pre-historic city of Guwahati for the benefit of working journalists across Assam and urged the State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take personal interest in allotting a suitable plot of land to the registered press club for fulfilling its dream.
In a memorandum dated Guwahati, 8 July 2020 to the State government, the press club stated that the eco-friendly centre would function as an independent body and sincerely following relevant health guidelines, it would offer a meeting place for scribes, initiate programs for their skill development and capacity building, arrange for recreation facilities and also other possible welfare activities for media families.
“Regular programs like press meets/briefings, interactive sessions with distinguished personalities, video conferences with foreign journalists, workshops & training programs for young scribes, regular medical clinics with the help of acclaimed hospitals for the benefit of scribes, film & documentary screenings, etc can be organized at the centre,” said the PCA memorandum.
It also added that various non-media organizations and individuals can also take advantage of the centre as they would be able to organize programs and express their opinions freely on matters of public importance. Regular screening of national and international classics for the benefit of film-goers (including students) is also on the card, stated the memorandum.
Signed by PCA president Kailas Sarma, working president Nava Thakuria and general secretary Hiren Chandra Kalita, the memorandum argued that to facilitate all such kinds of activities a sophisticated conference/screening hall, an auditorium with around 300 seat capacities, a canteen/restaurant, few rooms for emergency lodging, parking space for around 50 vehicles, etc would be a necessity.
Copied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the memorandum also highlighted that the entire project would be powered by rooftop solar energy so that it depends little on regular electricity during daytime. Moreover, a scientific arrangement for garbage management and recycling of water (used in the centre) along with an efficient rainwater harvesting system would be used to make it eco-friendly.
