Coronavirus infection is on the rise in prisons. As of Thursday, 46 inmates and prison guards had been attacked in six jails across the country. In this situation, the relatives of the prisoners are not able to meet them during the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
Prison authorities stopped visiting relatives with inmates at 68 prisons across the country last April to prevent coronavirus infection. According to the Department of Prisons, 279 inmates and prison guards were in quarantine in prisons across the country till yesterday.
According to the Department of Prisons, now Dhaka Central Jail, Sylhet Central Jail, Narayanganj, Bogra, Panchagarh and Rangpur. In these six prisons, 46 inmates and jail guards are affected by corona. 7 of them have recovered already. One prisoner died.
In April, the first corona was identified in the body of a prisoner at Dhaka Central Jail. Later Coronavirus was detected in 11 guards who were guarding him.
Spokesperson and Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (AIG, Prisons) Muhammad Manzoor Hossain said, “The relatives of the detainees will not be able to visit them until the situation in the country returns to normal. However, measures are being taken to ensure that their relatives can talk on their mobile phones during Eid with the detainees in the country’s jails. On the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, it is difficult to talk to so many prisoners and their relatives. Therefore, arrangements are being made so that the prisoners can take turns talking on the day before Eid, on the day of Eid and on the day after Eid.”
