Debaters from different public and private universities took part in the 7th Inter-University Environment Debate held in Dhaka. The semifinal of university debate on the environment was held in BUET, Dhaka on May 16, 2018. Young debaters put forward their arguments on different environmental issues in the 7th Inter-University Debate Competition. In the semi-finals of inter-university debate completion, host BUET Debating Club defeated East-West University Debating Club. In another semi-final, Bangladesh Agriculture University team defeated a team from Dhaka University.
Department of Environment (DoE), BUET Debating Club and Save the Children organized the debate competition among students of different universities in Bangladesh to celebrate upcoming World Environment Day 2018. World Environment Day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Motto of this year is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution / if you can’t reuse it, refuse it’.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed, DG of Department of Environment inaugurated 7th inter-university environment debate on May 14, 2018. “Human beings are primarily responsible for pollution and action must be taken by us immediately to reverse the trend”- said DG of Department of Environment under Ministry of Environment & Forest.
Dr. Mir Tareque Ali, Professor and Head, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, BUET attended as special guests. “While teaching students, we come across different issues related to lives under water. Due to human actions, lives underwater get affected’- he said. He also tanked Save the Children for supporting the debate competition. Mirza Shawkat Ali, Director (Climate change & International Convention) of DoE moderated the inaugural session.
A total of 16 universities took part in the debate competition. Apart from host BUET, participating universities included Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Khulna University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, North South University and Brac University. Grand final will take place in the early week of June.
