Noted singer Shammi Akhtar passed away on the way to Birdem Hospital in Dhaka this afternoon. She was 62.
She breathed her last around 4:00 pm, her husband Akramul Islam told reporters. Shammi Akhtar had been suffering from breast cancer for the last six years, Akramul said.
“Shammi Akhtar fell sick this afternoon. She breathed her last around 4:20 pm on her way to the Birdem Hospital from our Shantinagar residence,” Akramul said.
She won Bangladesh National Film Award in 2010. Her popular renditions like Dhaka Shohor Aisa Amar Asha Furaichhe, Ami Jemon Achhi Temon Robo Bow Hobonare, Bhalobasleo Sobar Sathe Ghor Badha Jaina and others won the hearts of millions.
She debuted as a playback singer in the 1970s with the movie ‘Ashikkhito’. In 1977, Akhtar married folksinger Islam. The couple has a son and a daughter.
