Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain Tipu framed the charges against Sunny after rejecting time petition filed by his counsel Jewel Ahamed in the case on Sunday
A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against Bangladesh national cricketer Arafat Sunny on charges of demanding dowry from his wife Nasrin Sultana.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain Tipu indicted Sunny after rejecting time petition filed by his counsel Jewel Ahamed in the case on Sunday.
On January 23, Sunny’s wife Nasrin Sultana filed the case against left-arming cricketer and his mother Nargis Akter on charges of demanding Tk20 lakh as dowry and torturing her.
After recording Nasrin’s statement, the court exempted Sunny’s mother from the charges and asked Sunny to appear before the court on April 5 and he was given an interim bail on the same day.
According to the case statement, Sunny married Nasrin on December 4, 2014 with an endowment of Tk5.1 lakh and they used to live at the house of Nasrin’s sister in Katasur area of Mohammadpur.
On July 29, 2015, Sunny and his mother demanded Tk20 lakh as dowry from Nasrin and asked her to bring the money from her father. Sunny left Nasrin as the latter’s family had failed to the demand, the case statement read.
She also alleged that Sunny had threatened her to publish their compromising photographs if she failed to provide the dowry by December 23, 2016.
Later, Nasrin lodged a general diary with Mohammadpur police station on December 25, 2016.
Arafat was arrested from his Aminbazar residence in Savar on January 22 in another case filed with Mohammadpur police station by her wife under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act over posting their personal pictures on social media without her consent.
