India’s cricket board on Sunday approved the country’s participation in the Champions Trophy, ending speculation about the team staying away from the tournament because of a financial dispute with the International Cricket Council.
India on Monday announced it’s 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy.
India brought fit-again fast bowler Mohammed Shami back into their squad to defend the ICC Champions Trophy after ending their battle with the world governing body over financial conditions.
Shami and batsman Rohit Sharma are the only two changes from the team that played England in a three-match one-day series in India this year.
The BCCI delayed naming the Indian team because of its objections that a new ICC financial formula hurts India’s interests by reducing its revenues from $570 million to $293 million for the period 2016-23. Reportedly, the ICC has offered India another $100 million but that is yet to be accepted by the BCCI.
The BCCI’s use of the Champions Trophy as a bargaining chip was strongly criticised and Indian cricketing greats including Sachin Tendulkar urged the country to compete.
