IOM delivered a consignment of non-food aid to communities most affected by Hurricane Matthew in Cuba’s Guantanamo province.
The aid consisted of 820 mattresses that will be distributed to the worst affected families in the coming days, according to local officials. IOM will also provide victims with 2,840 CGI roofing sheets by the end of this month.
“IOM and Cuba have had collaborative relationships for over 25 years and this initiative is another positive step,” said IOM Cuba Liaison Officer Sonia Karakadze. IOM Director General William Lacy Swing visited Cuba in June 2016.
IOM’s contribution is in response to needs identified in the reconstruction plan prepared by the government with support from the United Nations system. IOM and UN agencies will continue to seek to mobilize funds to support various municipalities affected by the hurricane.
