A national workshop on Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Education and Education in Emergencies (EiE) was organized at the CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh on November 2, 2016. Directorate for Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) of Government of Bangladesh (GoB) organized the workshop with the technical assistance from Save the Children.
Abdul Awal, Program Officer of ECHO and Lina Gertsch, Acting Sector Director- Education of Save the Children were present as guest of honors. Professor SM Wahiduzzaman, director general of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education presided over the meeting.
Representatives from DSHE, EC, Save the Children, teachers, representatives of different NGOs and UN organizations involved with humanitarian response took part in different sessions and contributed to the further development of the framework.
‘Participants of this workshop are key stakeholders of secondary education and I expect the highest output from you to finalize the framework for disaster risk reduction in education. It would help us combat future disaster skillfully as Bangladesh is prone to climatic events and disasters ’- said Education Secretary Md Sohorab Hossain while inaugurating the workshop.
The European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection under its eight Disaster Preparedness Action Plan (DIPECHO-8) has been funding the action Learning Resilience: Institutionalizing School Disaster Management (SDM) in the education sector in Bangladesh.
