RYS Team Holinger had a morning of mixed emotions for qualifying at the Hungaroring. Before Tim Stupple was even able to set a time, the first session was red flagged due to the number 74 RYS Team True Racing driver Anna Rathe having a high-speed crash. Rathe was extracted from the car and is ok.
The session took some time to restart due to barrier repairs that were required as the impact of Rathe’s KTM was enough to roll the tyre barrier up and over the barrier behind it.
Using their skill and experience, Sebastian Wedgwood and Roberts Ramanis were able to deploy clever racecraft for the session restart keeping Stupple well out of traffic and a lot of free air in front of him.
Stupple was released into the shortened session with just six minutes left to run and just enough time for him to complete three flying laps crossing the line to start his final flying lap with just four seconds to spare.
Stupple continued to improve with his fastest lap coming two laps after the session restart. Staying on pace with his previous lap time Stupple showed signs to improve on his final flying lap however came short by three-thousandths of a second.
Roberts Ramanis says, “Qualifying was both good and bad. The first qualifying was really great, we did everything just right but then in the second session we had radio issues and problems with time. We didn’t have enough time in qualifying two to put in a good lap time but other than that I’m really happy for Tim putting in that lap time. We have a good starting position in race one, tomorrow we’re going to use a similar tactic to what Sebastian Vettel used in Singapore going from basically last to fifth and maybe even better.”
Due to only a three-minute break being permitted from the chequered flag in the opening session to the start of the shortened seven-minute session the pressure was on for Marioneck.
Marioneck was sent out at the earliest opportunity, however, due to poor traffic he could only managed 14th position with a 1m57.208s Tim Stupple starts race one in eight position 1m55.696s.
