The residents of several areas of Old Dhaka in Bangladesh are recently passing through acute scarcity of water as Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) failed to supply water regarding the minimum need of water daily.
In this case, WASA is subjected to fall through adequate supply water among the areas like Dholaikhal, Ghualghat lane of Wari, Banianagar, Narinda because of lack of its proper monitoring and maintenance.
Azmal Hossain, a student’s of Jagannath University who lives in a mess of Dholaikhal area told, “We are struggling a lot as we have to walk a long way to collect water from alternative sources or buy bottled water which is not always affordable. There is not found a drop of water in the tab maximum time of a day.”
Talking to News Hour, a resident of Ghualghat lane Suman Mia urged that, “We have been living here more than 15 years but have not experienced too many troubles of water like present”
He claimed that they are getting water available from Wasa for a few minutes for the last three weeks only to midnight, and in the daytime, they do not get a drop of water.
“We along with some reliable persons in this colony appeared to WASA authority with a letter relating to the problem and asked for taking out required measures to overcome this crisis” he added.
Getting annoyed with the Dhaka Wasa’s setbacks in resolving water-logging and water crisis, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon recently indicated it as a “failed” institution over the last few years of its questionable performance.
In reaction to Mayors statement, an official of Dhaka Wasa said seeking anonymity “The duty resolve water crisis in Dhaka southern part lies with Dhaka South City Corporation”
When Contacted, Managing Director of Dhaka Wasa Taqsem A Khan said, “In general, during dry seasons, problems arise in some areas since the deep tube wells malfunction. Also, load shedding and declining water level are the other reasons behind the water shortage.”
In this regard, “I will ask the Wasa officials concerned to take steps to resolve water crisis problems as soon as possible” he assured.
