Microsoft empowers the next generation in Bangladesh through computer science education

Microsoft Bangladesh is initiating coding for local school children to teach students the basics of computer programming. As a part of ­this initiative, Microsoft Bangladesh will organize a two-hour workshop titled ‘Coding for Kids’ on February 3, 2017, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), Dhaka, Bangladesh as part of the BASIS SoftExpo-2017. The event is open to all school children from class 1-8.

Tarana Halim, Honorable State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Division, will be the chief guest at this session. Mr. Bonomali Bhowmik, DG, ICT Division, Ministry of Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Mr. Abdur Rob, Director (Policy and Operations), Joint Secretary, Directorate of Primary Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education will be the special guests.

400 children between classes 1-8, from different schools, are expected to participate in this workshop that will be conducted from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM by Wellington Perera, Developer Experience Lead for the Southeast Asia New Markets, Microsoft Asia Pacific and moderated by Munir Hasan, Coordinator Youth Program, Prothom Alo.

“According to a recent study by Accenture, digital technology will propel $2 trillion of the global economic output by 2020. It is critical for children to learn technology-based skills which they need to seize the unprecedented opportunities ahead. Can we imagine a future where every youth in Bangladesh is equipped with the foundations’ computer science and coding and trained in problem-solving and critical thinking skills which are required to thrive in the tech-powered world? There will be no limit to what they achieve,” said Sonia Bashir Kabir, Managing Director of Microsoft Bangladesh.

Kabir added, “I am also passionate about encouraging students to study sciences. The technology industry needs to work with the future generation, colleges and universities to create awareness, educate and attract these young minds towards science education during their formative years. We are inviting school students and urging their parents to bring their children at the coding workshop on Friday.”
