The Pentagon said on Friday that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the evacuation of roughly 5,000 troops from Germany during the next year.
Following a dispute with Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, on the US-Israeli assault against Iran earlier this week, President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw soldiers from NATO partner Germany.
“We expect the withdrawal to be completed over the next six to twelve months,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
“This decision follows a thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe and is in recognition of theater requirements and conditions on the ground,” Parnell added.
Germany’s Merz has become a target of Trump’s ire after saying Monday that Iran is “humiliating” Washington at the negotiating table.
Merz “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” according to Trump on Tuesday. He has no idea what he’s talking about.
Trump stated on Wednesday that Washington was “studying and reviewing the possible reduction” of US forces in Germany and that he would make a decision within a “short period of time.”
Trump has threatened to reduce US force deployments in Germany and other European allies throughout each of his periods in office, claiming he wants Europe to assume more responsibility for its defense instead of relying on Washington.
