Gas leak at Polish coal mine kills two: operator

The operator of the Polish mine, where a gas explosion claimed 14 lives in 2022, reported on Tuesday that two miners had perished as a result of a methane leak.

According to operator Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa (JSW), the accident happened on Monday afternoon at the Pniowek colliery in the southern Polish Silesia basin.

According to JSW, the two “very experienced” miners were 830 meters (2,723 ft) below the surface at the time.

Eight more people were saved.

Poland, which still relies on coal for nearly 60 percent of its energy, has witnessed a number of mining accidents in recent years.

At the same Pniowek mine, a methane gas explosion in April 2022 claimed the lives of fourteen miners and rescue personnel.

According to Polish state media TVP, fifteen individuals have perished in mines this year.

Poland intends to close a number of mines in the upcoming decades in an effort to decarbonize its economy.
