Even his allies pressed President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to find a quick solution to France’s political impasse after his former ally and first prime minister called on him to step down for the good of the nation.
Macron, who has been president since 2017, has been dealing with his toughest domestic political crisis since his seventh prime minister, Sebastien Lecornu, abruptly resigned on Monday.
Although it is far from guaranteed that these attempts would be successful, Macron gave Lecornu till Wednesday night to work out a settlement for a long-term coalition government.
If this fails, one option is for Macron to dissolve parliament and hold snap legislative elections in the hope of having a more workable make-up in the legislature.
According to an aide who wished to remain anonymous, Macron spoke with the speakers of the upper and lower chambers of parliament on Tuesday night.
It was unclear why the two sessions were held, but if new elections are scheduled, the president must confer with both speakers.
