Built across the Teesta River in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district, the 1,490-meter-long “Mawlana Bhashani Bridge” has opened to traffic with the hopes of creating new opportunities for regional development and connection.
According to a press release issued here, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, the adviser for local government, rural development, and cooperatives, officially opened the bridge that was built across the Teesta River on the Panchpir Bazar–Chilmari Upazila Sadar road today.
On the occasion, officials of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner (DC) office and a delegation from Saudi Arabia were present.
LGED constructed the bridge with 1,490 meters in length and 9.60 meters in width at a cost of Taka 925 crore, jointly funded by the government of Bangladesh (GoB), the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID). The bridge is featured with 155 girders.
China State Construction Engineering Corporation constructed the bridge as the prime contractor.
According to officials, the recently built bridge will greatly enhance communication between Kurigram’s Chilmari upazila and Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila. By lowering travel expenses and times, this improved connection will promote the growth of small and medium-sized businesses as well as industrial and agricultural output.
Additionally, it is anticipated that the region’s educational system would grow and advance with improved connection and a more robust road network across both banks of the river.
In the medium and long terms, the project would create jobs for the local poor, promoting socioeconomic advancement and the expansion of the national economy.
The bridge would also boost tourism and establish a new transport corridor, reducing the distance between Gaibandha district and the capital Dhaka by about 100 kilometers.
