Govt forms five-member committee on NBR issue

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed today announced the decision to form a five-member adviser-level committee aimed at resolving the ongoing issues at the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

While addressing reporters after a meeting with the country’s leading business leaders at the Finance Ministry conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Dr. Salehuddin did not immediately disclose the names of the committee members or its specific terms of reference.

The meeting itself was convened with the objective of finding a resolution to the ongoing movement and protests by NBR staff. In response to a query, the Finance Adviser stated that the newly formed committee would deliberate on potential reforms for the revenue board, taking into account input from all concerned parties.

During the meeting, leaders of various chambers and trade bodies emphasized their strong desire for a swift resolution to the NBR’s ongoing disruptions, highlighting the adverse impact on the country’s vital export and import activities.

The high-level meeting saw the participation of NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan, alongside prominent business figures including Mahbubur Rahman, President of the International Chamber of Commerce Bangladesh (ICC-B); AK Azad, Vice-President of ICC-B; Tapan Chowdhury, former President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and former caretaker government adviser; Syed Nasim Manzur, President of the Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh; Kamran T Rahman, President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI); and Simeen Rahman, Vice-President of the MCCI.

Also in attendance were Mir Nasir Hossain, former President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI); Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), President of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI); Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA); Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, Executive President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA); and Taskeen Ahmed, President of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
