Russia replied for a blatant attack on air bases days earlier by launching a volley of missiles, drones, and bombs across Ukraine early Saturday, killing five people.
The most recent ceasefire talks have not succeeded in ending the three-year conflict, and the Kremlin has increased its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks.
“The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” the Ukrainian air force claimed, citing Russia’s firing of 206 drones and nine missiles.
Mayor Igor Terekhov of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, said the attack was unprecedented and counted 48 Iranian-made drones, two missiles, and four guided bombs before sunrise.
Less than 50 kilometers separate the 1.4 million-person northeastern city from the Russian border.
