Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people and wounded dozens more, according to local rescuers. The attacks come as Israel intensifies its military operations, asserting a renewed push to dismantle Hamas.
Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defense agency, reported that seven individuals were killed in a strike on a home in Jabalia, located in northern Gaza. He noted that some victims remained trapped under debris, hindered by the civil defense’s lack of specialized search and heavy lifting equipment.
Further south, in central Gaza, two people were killed in an attack targeting tents housing displaced individuals near Nuseirat. Among the deceased was a woman who was seven months pregnant; medical personnel were tragically unable to save her unborn child. Bassal also confirmed that Ashraf Abu Nar, the civil defense’s director of operations, and his wife were killed in a strike on their home in Nuseirat.
Fatal strikes were additionally recorded in areas around Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Beit Lahia in the north, and the major southern city of Khan Yunis. In total, civil defense teams recovered “at least 22 martyrs, including a number of children, and dozens of injured” on Sunday, with several individuals still reported missing, Bassal stated.
The Israeli military has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these specific strikes.
The heightened Israeli operations are occurring amidst mounting international pressure for humanitarian access to Gaza, which has faced widespread shortages of food and medicine due to a prolonged blockade. In a partial easing of restrictions, COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry body coordinating civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, announced that “107 trucks belonging to the UN and the international community carrying humanitarian aid… were transferred” into Gaza on Sunday.
Gaza’s health ministry reported on Sunday that at least 3,785 people have been killed in the territory since a ceasefire collapsed on March 18, bringing the overall war-related death toll to 53,939, predominantly civilians. The conflict was triggered by Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Militants also took 251 hostages, with 57 reportedly still held in Gaza, including 34 whom the Israeli military believes are deceased.
