Bangladesh has been asked to endorse the United Kingdom’s candidacy for the International Court of Justice.
According to a press release from the ministry today, the appeal was made during a visit by British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke to Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry here on Wednesday.
The two parties discussed a wide variety of bilateral and international matters of mutual concern during the meeting.
Discussions touched upon recent developments in the region, with both sides underscoring the importance of de-escalation and stability. The foreign secretary expressed hope for a peaceful settlement of the current issues and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to regional peace.
The changing role of the United Nations in tackling today’s global issues was also discussed.
The Foreign Secretary underlined Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and emphasized the country’s active participation, especially in UN Peacekeeping Missions.
Both sides discussed about views on other issues such as UN80, the UN Committee on Decolonization (C24), continuing cooperation between two countries on judicial issues etc. The UN’s continued involvement in the Rohingya camp sites was another topic the High Commissioner discussed.
The Foreign Secretary appealed for the UK’s ongoing assistance in this area and underlined the significance of establishing favorable conditions for the Rohingyas’ safe, voluntary, and sustainable return to their homeland.
In order to further improve the long-standing bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, both parties pledged to look for new opportunities for cooperation that would benefit both parties.
