Russia in touch with other countries on Syria violence: Kremlin

Russia wants the war-torn nation to be “united” and is in contact with other nations on the recent wave of bloodshed in Syria, the Kremlin announced Tuesday.

The biggest threat to Syria’s stability since Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow in December has come from days of upheaval in the Alawite minority’s stronghold.

“We are ready and are in contact with other countries on the Syrian issue,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, adding Moscow “wants to see Syria united, prosperous and friendly”.

After more than 13 years of civil conflict, rebel forces overthrew Assad, who then fled to Russia.

When it first interfered, Moscow, his main military and political ally, helped tip the scales in his favor.

Russia has made an effort to strengthen relations with the new government, especially in order to protect its military installations there.

On Monday, Syria’s new government declared the conclusion of an operation against Assad supporters that, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, killed at least 1,068 people, the majority of them were Alawite minority members who were killed by the security forces or their allies.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, the country’s interim president, is working to dismantle armed organizations and impose government authority over the whole nation.

A deal with the leader of the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to include the institutions of the autonomous Kurdish administration in the northeast into the national government was also announced by the Syrian presidency on Monday.
