According to authorities on Tuesday, a man was sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Russian military court for giving Ukraine information on a military facility close to Moscow and planning assaults.
The Russian Investigative Committee claimed that the guy supplied pictures and topographical information “to his Ukrainian mentors to guide a drone strike against this military site” after filming an air defense system in Podolsk, which is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Moscow, in April.
Trials for treason, terrorism, extremism, sabotage, and espionage have increased since February 2022, when Russia began cracking down on opponents of what it describes as a special military campaign in Ukraine.
According to the committee, the guy also smuggled weapons from Ukraine to Russia in 2017 in order to plan assaults in a number of areas that border Ukraine, including Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk.
The court also found him guilty of involvement in terrorist activity, arms trafficking, and attack preparation.
Since 2022, Russia has sanctioned, threatened, or imprisoned thousands of people for opposing the crisis in Ukraine, in addition to treason proceedings.
