Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, declared on Tuesday that his organization will assist Bangladesh in its efforts to resolve the Rohingya issue in a way that would last.
Grandi said this after visiting Bangladesh Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus in the Swiss city of Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum meeting.
Grandi responded, “We stand ready to cooperate with you,” when the chief adviser asked for his help with the Rohingya situation, specifically with regard to convening a significant international conference on the subject later this year.
“Your voice will be more critical,” Prof Yunus said.
The main adviser urged refocusing international attention on the Rohingya issue, claiming that Bangladesh is now facing an even greater burden due to the arrival of an additional 100,000 refugees.
“The matter is becoming more complex. He claimed that additional Rohingyas were being forced to flee to Bangladesh.
Grandi expressed gratitude to the chief adviser for Bangladesh for enabling the Rohingyas to construct their shelters using superior materials.
The Rohingyas were previously only permitted to construct shelters out of tarps and bamboo.
During the meeting, they also discussed the humanitarian situation inside Myanmar’s Rakhine State where the rebel group Arakan Army is fighting against the Myanmar military.
The chief adviser said he has appointed a high representative for the Rohingya crisis and he is coordinating among all the government and international agencies.
