Chinese Ambassador meets FS ahead of FA’s visit

In advance of Foreign Advisor (FA) Touhid Hossain’s visit to China, which is set for January 20–24, 2025, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen met with Foreign Secretary (FS) Md. Jashim Uddin today.

According to a foreign ministry press release this evening, the discussion, which took place at the foreign ministry, focused primarily on both parties’ preparations for the Foreign Adviser’s visit.

Since this is the foreign adviser’s first formal bilateral visit this year, it was emphasized that the impending visit will be especially significant.

The top diplomats from both nations are anticipated to formally proclaim the start of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh and China’s diplomatic ties during the visit.

As a demonstration of a renewed commitment to expanding their strategic collaboration, the visit is expected to deepen the friendship, understanding, and dynamic partnership between the two countries.

China is truly grateful for Bangladesh’s steadfast support of the One-China Policy, Ambassador Yao Wen said.

He reaffirmed China’s firm respect for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reiterated China’s continued support for Bangladesh’s stability, reforms, and democratic transition.

The envoy emphasized that this visit would further cement the cooperative ties between the two nations.

Wen also emphasized the significance of bolstering strategic and economic cooperation, with an emphasis on attempts to improve connectivity and projects like the China Economic Zone in Chattogram.

He underlined the value of pragmatic bilateral collaboration, especially in areas like port modernization and digital connectivity.

The talks also touched on regional and international problems, particularly the continuing Rohingya catastrophe.

The Foreign Secretary expressed Bangladesh’s sincere gratitude to China for its proactive involvement in promoting discussion on the matter and asked for China’s ongoing assistance in guaranteeing the early return of the Myanmar nationals who had been forcibly evicted. A shared commitment to regional peace and stability was conveyed by both parties.

 The meeting also touched upon exchange of visits and agreed that such visits will further strengthen the bilateral relationship and contribute to greater cooperation in areas like trade, infrastructure, and regional connectivity.

The meeting concluded with the hope that the Foreign Adviser’s visit will pave the way for a new chapter of cooperation between Bangladesh and China.
