US President-elect Trump to be sentenced for hush money conviction

Despite his last-ditch attempts to thwart a process that would make him the first felon in the White House, Donald Trump will be sentenced on Friday for concealing hush money payments to a porn star.

Despite the fact that Trump may be imprisoned for the 34 charges of manipulating company documents on which he was found guilty in May 2024, the court has stated that he will not be going to prison. Instead, he is expected to get an unconditional discharge, which is a somewhat unusual punishment and the least severe criminal penalty allowed.

Trump is anticipated to participate remotely in the sentencing, which will take place in the slick Manhattan courthouse that saw the high drama, legal fighting, and venomous personal assaults during the trial.

Trump had to watch as a number of witnesses testified during the trial that he had falsely concealed illegal payments to porn star Stormy Daniels in order to prevent her from revealing their tryst before the 2016 presidential election, which he eventually won.

Daniels’ toe-curling testimony covered Trump’s flirting and interest in the adult film industry, as well as details of her sexual experience with him, which he has always denied.

The judge intervened to stop more explicit testimony.

After a New York State appeals court rejected Trump’s attempt to have the hearing postponed and the state’s highest court refused to take action, he made a last-minute petition to the nation’s highest court for a halt of the criminal proceedings.

The Supreme Court, however, decided that the sentencing may go forward.

Ten days before Trump is scheduled to take office for a second term, prosecutors argued that it was improper for the Supreme Court to consider the case when the mogul still had New York appeals to pursue. As a result, they rejected the attempt to postpone sentence.

“This Court lacks jurisdiction over a state court’s management of an ongoing criminal trial when defendant has not exhausted his state-law remedies,” the prosecution told the Supreme Court Thursday.
