A chairlift in the French Alps fell down Tuesday, forcing some 240 skiers to be flown to safety, according to officials.
At the well-known Superdevoluy resort in the southern French Alps, the skiers were helicoptered out of the Festoure chairlift.
The Christmas Eve rescue was said to be injury-free.
“An electrical failure in the engine system has made it impossible to operate the Festoure chairlift at the Superdevoluy resort,” the prefecture said in a statement, adding that all the skiers were unharmed.
According to officials, the breakdown happened in the afternoon.
The ski resorts of Superdevoluy and Joue du Loup are part of the Devoluy mountain, which is situated between Gap and Grenoble at an elevation of 1,500 to 2,500 meters (4,920 to 8,200 feet).
