In honour of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the American Embassy in Dhaka, in collaboration with the American Film Showcase (AFS), screened the documentary “A Woman’s Place” at the American Centre.
According to a media statement from the US embassy, the event attracted a lively audience that included exchange graduates and teachers from the fields of gender studies, development studies, sociology, and criminology.
Through meaningful discourse and involvement, the Embassy hopes to promote women’s empowerment and increase awareness of gender-based discrimination by utilising its alumni network.
The event was launched by Bren Flanigan, the deputy director of Public Engagement at the US Embassy in Dhaka.
He underscored the importance of fostering safe, inclusive environments where women can thrive.
He emphasised the US. Embassy’s dedication to promoting gender equality and human rights in Bangladesh.
“A Woman’s Place” spotlights the challenges women face in male-dominated industries, following the stories of three pioneering female chefs as they confront gender-based discrimination.
After the screening, two eminent speakers participated in a panel discussion led by UN Women Bangladesh’s Syeda Samara Mortada.
Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) graduate and founder and managing director of The Dimension Packaging, Jannatul Ferdousi, talked about her experiences as a trailblazing female entrepreneur fostering inclusive workplaces in Bangladesh.
Dr. Samina Luthfa, an associate professor at the University of Dhaka and a Fulbright alumnus, shared her perspectives on workplace resilience, gender challenges, and the value of activism and education in breaking down structural obstacles.
The US Embassy organised this event as part of its broader mission to support gender equality and address systemic barriers facing women.
The screening aimed to spark critical conversations on building supportive environments for women and encourage action toward a more inclusive society.
The event reflected the US Department of State’s initiative to use film as a tool for cross-cultural dialogue and social change.
