Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzad Ali of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today urged everyone to cooperate in following traffic laws in order to keep the roads in order.
For the sake of traffic safety, the DMP head also asked everyone to exercise caution so that no new autorickshaws can access the capital city’s key thoroughfares.
At the DMP headquarters here today, he made the call while meeting with a delegation of battery-powered rickshaw drivers, owners, garage owners, and rickshaw-van, easy bike workers’ union.
In compliance with the court ruling, the DMP Commissioner announced that autorickshaws will no longer operate on the major thoroughfares. However, he stated that these cars will still use the various lanes as previously.
Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Md. Israel Hawlader and Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Khondaker Nazmul Hasan were present at the meeting, among others.
Battery-powered rickshaw drivers had been protesting in different areas of the capital for the past few days demanding a stay on the High Court’s ruling to ban battery-powered rickshaws.
The High Court’s ruling to outlaw battery-powered rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area within three days was granted a one-month stay by the Supreme Court on November 25.
Given this, a group of rickshaw owners and drivers was invited to participate in talks.
