Ukraine, and Russia both claim advances in the Kursk region

In the largest attack by a foreign army on Russian territory since World War II, Ukraine said on Thursday that it has captured almost 1,100 square kilometers as part of its offensive into Russia.

Ukraine claimed to have taken control of Sudzha, a town located eight kilometers (five miles) from the border, as well as numerous towns.

“We have taken control of 1,150 square kilometres of territory and 82 settlements,” said top military commander Oleksandr Syrsky.

In the meantime, Russia declared it was sending “additional forces” to the nearby Belgorod region and claimed to have retaken a settlement from Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk border region.

After fighting a Russian invasion for more than two years, Ukrainian troops finally started the attack on August 6, ending months of losses. President Volodymyr Zelensky was also informed by the senior general that the army had established an administrative office “to maintain law and order and meet the priority needs of the population in the controlled territories”.

Zelensky made known “the completion of the liberation of the town of Sudzha from the Russian military” .
