On Tuesday morning, Russia asserted that it had prevented a drone strike launched by Kyiv during the night in the western Belgorod region that borders Ukraine.
“Tonight, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using seven aircraft-type UAVs against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped,” the defence ministry said on Telegram.
“All Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted by air defence systems on duty over the territory of Belgorod region,” the ministry added without specifying the exact location of the attack or whether it caused any damage or injuries.
The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said the city of Gubkin had come under attack by Ukrainian drones.
No casualties were reported, Gladkov said on Telegram, but four homes were damaged.
“Windows were broken, roofs, facades and fences were cut,” he said.
Drone attacks by Ukraine have increased against Russian territory in recent months; these attacks primarily target border regions, but they also target Moscow, the country’s capital, and Saint Petersburg, a city in the north.
The deadliest attack of this kind happened on December 30 in Belgorod, the regional capital, leaving 25 people dead, about 100 wounded, and several hundred more evacuated.
