Low visibility due to intense fog has been causing significant travel disruptions in Delhi and its adjoining areas during the last couple of days forcing thousands of travelers to wait for hours at the airports and railway stations today.
More than 30 flights departing from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were delayed and 17 flights were cancelled due to low visibility amid dense fog, news agency ANI reported citing the airport officials.
However, train services were disrupted significantly across the India due to low visibility as foggy weather engulfed the country. At least 30 Delhi-bound trains were delayed by up to five-six hours this morning due to cold and dense fog.
The city’s Palam and Safdarjung Airports recorded visibilities within 500 metres in the morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),
However, at least 15 airports faced flight delays amid poor visibility as dense fog engulfed several cities across North and East India and the cold wave tightened its grip, the reports added.
The authorities have urged people to checkup their flights and weather conditions beforehand and prepare accordingly to avoid inconveniences.
IMD said a fog patch can be seen over the northern and north-eastern states with low visibility areas recorded in the airports situated in those states.
“Layer of fog is seen from Punjab to northeast India across Haryana, North MP, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar and West Bengal at 0530 hrs IST. The patches of fog are also seen along the east coast of India as shown in the attached Satellite Imagery,” the IMD said in a post on X.
