PM and newly appointed cabinet members honor Savar martyrs

Just one day after taking the oath of office to form the government for a record-breaking fifth and fourth consecutive terms, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina honored the Liberation War dead today.

At approximately 11 a.m., Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina first paid heartfelt homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath at the altar of the National Memorial at Savar, which is located outside of the capital city of Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina, flanked by her new cabinet colleagues, laid a second wreath at the National Memorial shrine.

After laying the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs who made supreme sacrifice for the independence of Bangladesh.

A smartly turned out contingent drawn from the three services gave a state salute, while bugle played the last post on the occasion.

Later, Sheikh Hasina signed the visitors’ book kept on the National Memorial premises.

Earlier in the morning, the Prime Minister, along with her new cabinet colleagues, honored Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, in Dhanmondi by laying wreaths at his portrait in front of the capital’s Bangabandhu Bhaban.

Sheikh Rehana, the younger sister of the Prime Minister, and the younger daughter of Bangabandhu were there at that time.

On January 7, 2024, Sheikh Hasina took the oath of office as prime minister for the sixth time. Four days earlier, the Awami League had won 222 out of 298 parliamentary seats in a landslide.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office and oath of secrecy to Sheikh Hasina and her new ministers at Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7.06pm on Thursday.

Her council of ministers included 25 ministers and 11 state ministers.
